In today’s fast-paced work environment, stress often seems unavoidable. Deadlines pile up, tensions rise, and it becomes all too easy to react impulsively—whether that means snapping at a colleague, feeling overwhelmed, or making decisions we later regret.
This month, at ESD Belgium, we’re focusing on a transformative skill designed to help you stay grounded and empowered in high-pressure situations: The Power of the Pause.
The ability to pause, process, and respond intentionally rather than emotionally can make all the difference in managing work stress effectively. The “Think and Yell” principle forms the foundation of this approach, giving you practical tools to navigate workplace challenges with resilience and clarity.
How to Practice the Power of the Pause?
This skill is rooted in three simple steps:
Think: Take a brief mental step back to assess the situation. Ask yourself:
What is triggering me right now?
What do I need in this moment to feel supported or effective?
Breathe: Use a calming breath to create space between your feelings and your response. This simple act not only helps you stay grounded but also prevents burnout by allowing you to self-regulate your emotions. Try this: Take 3-5 deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of air entering and leaving your body. For a structured approach, use the box breathing technique—inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, and hold for 4 counts again. This rhythm helps calm your nervous system and gives you the clarity needed to respond intentionally.
Express: Communicate your needs assertively and constructively to ensure your boundaries are respected while maintaining a positive dynamic in the workplace. To make this easier, use the 3-step Communication Formula we highlighted last month:
Describe the behaviour: Clearly state what happened without assigning blame.
Share how it makes you feel: Express your emotions honestly and calmly.
Ask for what you need: Make a clear and specific request.
Example:
Imagine a colleague frequently interrupts you during meetings. Start by pausing and thinking: Why does this bother me? Then, take a few deep breaths to calm your response. Once grounded, say: “When I’m interrupted during meetings (behaviour), I feel frustrated because it prevents me from sharing my ideas (feeling). Could you let me finish speaking before responding? (request)”
By combining all three steps, you’re not only addressing the issue calmly but also fostering mutual understanding and respect, helping to create a healthier and more productive work environment. Give it a try in a small situation today and notice the difference!
Why Mastering This Skill Matters?
The Power of the Pause isn’t just a tool for navigating work challenges—it’s a pathway to creating a healthier, more sustainable approach to life.
Here’s how it can benefit you:
Prevent Burnout: Break the cycle of stress and reactive behaviour.
Improve Relationships: Foster healthier workplace dynamics with clear and respectful communication.
Boost Confidence: Approach challenges with clarity and self-assurance.
