Skill of the Month: Mastering Defence Against a Dynamic Choke with a Push

At ESD Belgium, self-defence is more than just physical moves—it’s a foundation for empowerment and confidence. This November, as part of our Skill of the Month series, we’re focusing on a crucial technique: Defence Against a Dynamic Choke with a Push.

Why This Technique Matters

A choke with a push is an aggressive and potentially dangerous move. This type of attack can quickly disrupt your balance, restrict your airflow, and put you at risk of being overpowered or pushed to the ground. The force of the push combined with the choke can create disorientation and panic, making it difficult to respond effectively. Without a quick and decisive reaction, your ability to defend yourself diminishes rapidly.

Knowing how to counter this manoeuvre is essential for regaining control, creating space, and preventing further harm. An effective response allows you to protect yourself, re-establish your footing, and assess your surroundings for safety.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Technique

Learning this sequence will help you build muscle memory and confidence in your ability to protect yourself:

  1. Protect Your Vital Areas: Start by raising your shoulder and lowering your chin. This movement helps shield your neck and throat, minimizing the risk of injury and reducing the chance of your airflow being restricted.

  2. Create Distance: Move with the force of the push and step back to stabilize your position. As you do, lift your opposite hand and bring your bicep to your ear while turning your body away from the attacker.

  3. Break the Hold: Drop your raised elbow forcefully to your chest in a vertical, downward motion. This action disrupts the attacker’s grip and frees you from the choke.

  4. Guard and Counterattack: Immediately raise the same hand to protect your face. Follow up with a hammer strike using the same hand to catch the attacker off-guard.

  5. Continue Defensive Actions: Counter with targeted strikes to the head and groin, ensuring you create enough space to safely disengage.

  6. Assess Your Safety: Once you’ve created space, scan your surroundings to confirm there are no additional threats.
